Aamir Khan Auditioned for Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” But Didn’t Make the Cut

Kiran Rao, the acclaimed filmmaker, is eagerly anticipating the release of her latest cinematic venture, “Laapataa Ladies,” slated to hit theatres on March 1. However, what’s grabbed headlines recently is her revelation about her ex-husband and superstar Aamir Khan’s interest in being a part of the film.

In a candid interview, Kiran Rao disclosed that Aamir Khan expressed a keen desire to be a part of “Laapataa Ladies” and even auditioned for a role. However, Kiran made a conscious decision not to cast him, citing concerns about the “star baggage” he brought to the character. She emphasized the importance of finding a performer who seamlessly embodied the essence of the role without overshadowing it with their star persona.

Kiran elaborated on her casting choices, highlighting the need for actors who could bring a sense of unpredictability to their characters, thereby enhancing the narrative experience for the audience. She praised Ravi Kishan’s portrayal of ‘Manohar,’ emphasizing his ability to breathe life into the role in a manner that kept viewers engaged and intrigued till the very end.

The director explained that casting non-stars was a deliberate choice aimed at maintaining suspense and allowing viewers to discover new dimensions of the characters organically. She credited Aamir for supporting this approach, recognizing the value it added to the storytelling process.

Laapataa Ladies” promises to be a riveting tale set against the backdrop of 2001, revolving around the journey of two young brides who find themselves separated during a train journey, with Ravi Kishan’s character, a police investigator, embarking on a quest to unravel the mystery. Presented by Jio Studios and produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam.

Having garnered critical acclaim with its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year, “Laapataa Ladies” holds the promise of delivering an immersive cinematic experience that captivates audiences and leaves a lasting impact.
